Newly discovered Shakespeare script to be published by Cambridge University Press

Cambridge University Press is pleased to have acquired the rights to publish a newly unearthed Shakespeare script, discovered during recent excavations under the original Globe Theatre site.

The rights to publication of the work were obtained for an unprecedented £50 million after a fierce bidding war, and the original document will be restored and displayed in the Cambridge University Press museum archives.

The script was left untitled by the Bard himself, but will be published under the name Festum Fatuorum. It is a dramatic comedy which tells the story of a Roman Emperor holding a feast in honour of his daughter’s engagement, and her fiancé’s desperate attempts to impress his new in-laws.

Heidi Mulvey, Museum Curator at Cambridge University Press said: “We’re thrilled to have acquired this remarkable piece of history, which will have a monumental impact on Shakespeare scholarship, culture and theatre worldwide. The only problem is that we’ll now have to pulp our current edition of his complete works, unless we can staple the new play in the back somehow.”

Cambridge University Press has been publishing Shakespeare for over 150 years, including literary criticism, teaching and study guides across a range of printed and digital content.

Festum Fatuorum will be available to buy in bookshops or from the Cambridge University Press website from early 2017.
