About this Cambridge Elements series
SemStat Elements is the exclusive vehicle for short monographs prepared by the invited lecturers at the Seminaires Européens de Statistiques (SemStat). SemStat is known for high-quality courses of expository lectures on important new developments in statistics delivered at a biennial meeting to an audience of advanced PhD students. Each meeting is organized around a particular theme and consists of three courses of lectures.
Elements within the series are fast tracked after formal acceptance, updatable, accompanied by the latest functionality by being hosted on Cambridge's new institutional platform (Core), as well as being available as ebooks and via low-priced POD. They will appeal to researchers and graduate students who want to stay abreast of current methodology or learn new tools, and to instructors who wish to supplement course texts.
SemStat 2017 focused on Statistical Network Science and took place March 6-10, 2017 at Eurandom. The invited lecturers were Eric Kolaczyk (Boston University) and Alberto Roverato (University of Bologna).

About the editor - Ernst Wit
Ernst Wit is Chair of Statistics and Probability at the University of Groningen. He has held appointments at Pennsylvania State University, University of New South Wales, University of Glasgow and University of Lancaster. His current research focus is sparse inference, particularly related to network inference in biological systems. He was the Chair of the European Regional Committee (ERC) of the Bernoulli Society (2013-2015), which revived the SemStat series. He is currently coordinating a European COST Action on Statistical Network Science, and is a member of the ERC and the Board of Directors of the IBS. He has broad interests in statistics and its applications, ranging from high-dimensional inference, network analyses, statistical systems biology, optimal design and algebraic approaches to statistics.
About the Bernoulli Society
The Bernoulli Society is an international society founded in 1975, with membership in nearly 70 countries, whose objectives are the advancement of the sciences of probability (including stochastic processes) and mathematical statistics and of their applications to all aspects of human endeavor that are directed towards the increase of natural knowledge and the welfare of mankind. The Society publishes several research-level journals either on its own or in strategic association with other publishers and scientific societies; these include Bernoulli and Stochastic Processes and Their Applications. It also organizes or sponsors several international meetings on themes relevant to the Society's objectives.
COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a pan-European intergovernmental framework. Its mission is to enable break-through scientific and technological developments leading to new concepts and products and thereby contribute to strengthening Europe’s research and innovation capacities. It allows researchers, engineers and scholars to jointly develop their own ideas and take new initiatives across all fields of science and technology, while promoting multi- and interdisciplinary approaches. COST aims at fostering a better integration of less research intensive countries to the knowledge hubs of the European Research Area.
