About the Authors
  • No foreign conflict has had a greater impact on modern British politics than the Spanish Civil War (1936-9). It served to galvanize political activity in Britain, both in support of the Republican government and of Franco's Nationalist rebels. Tom Buchanan draws heavily on new archival sources to reinterpret familiar aspects of this war, such as the role of the British government, the intellectuals, and the International Brigades, as well as to shed light on previously neglected subjects such as right-wing and religious opinion.

    • Covers all aspects of British involvement in the Spanish Civil War
    • Offers an original interpretation of why the Civil War was so important to Britain
    • Based on archival research (including new sources)
    • The first work of its kind, (i.e. covering all aspects of British involvement in the Civil War)

"...Buchanan's book is a useful addition to the voluminous historiography on the Spanish Civil War." Denis Smith, American Historical Review

"For readers seeking a concise account of the complex impact of the Spanish Civil War on Great Britain, Tom Buchanan's new book is a good place to start." Douglas Little, Journal of Modern History
