About the Authors
  • This fully revised second edition of the Companion to the New Testament now follows the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). Using accessible non-technical language, A.E. Harvey provides a running commentary on the text of the New Testament that applies the findings of recent scholarship. Setting the text in the context of the time and place in which it was written, Harvey clarifies its meaning in the light of modern methods of research and interpretation. The work will be invaluable to clergy as well as lay people. First Edition Pb (1979): 0-521-50539-9

    • A full revision of the Companion first published in 1970, incorporating advances in New Testament scholarship
    • Now based on The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible
    • Uses no technical language, ensuring text remains accessible for general readers

'I would wholeheartedly recommend that it be put into the hands of intelligent lay people who want to get at the substance of the New Testament message and the problems involved in our attempt to understand it.' Paul J. Achtemeier, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly

'A remarkable achievement.' C.F.D. Moule, Journal of Theological Studies

    'Very readable.' Bible Study Monthly

'An excellent work.' Robert C. Campbell, Baptist Leader

'It is the sort of handbook to which pastors will learn to turn repeatedly when preparing sermons or lessons for study groups.' Howard Clark Tree, Theology Today

'Accessible and up-to-date, this work will be invaluable to clergy, students and all who have a serious interest in the New Testament, including pastors preparing sermons … learned, reliable, plainspoken and honest Companion, which has been so widely acclaimed for its scholarship, insight and sense of historical style. 'Accessible and up-to-date, this work will be invaluable to clergy, students and all who have a serious interest in the New Testament, including pastors preparing sermons. Indeed, anyone tackling the New Testament could do a lot worse than to refer to this learned, reliable, plainspoken and honest Companion, which has been so widely acclaimed for its scholarship, insight and sense of historical style.' The Universe

'… wise and lucid commentary. Enormous amounts of information - and the fruits of a lifetime's engagement with other scholars - are distilled into page after page of the elegant prose for which Dr Harvey is known. The book is a pleasure to read. It will be highly valued both by preachers and by general readers seeking a one-volume commentary.' Church Times

'Anthony Harvey's style is clear and logical. … The Companion is a distinguished work which succeeds admirably in providing its intended reader with a lucid and scholarly commentary on the New Testament. In an era of hyper-specialization, its range and authoritative tone, sustained over such a breadth of material, are highly creditable.' The Times Literary Supplement

'Readers will appreciate Dr Harvey's placing of the Biblical narrative in its historical and geographical context … invaluable text both for its intended general readership and for theological students … it is an authoritative text … important adjunct to collections of Bibles and Biblical dictionaries in reference libraries.'
