Giving students an insight into life as a lawyer
Juliet Holden, Corporate Responsibility Executive at international law firm, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, tells us about the new e-learning resource they’ve launched to encourage young people to consider a legal career.
Extending our reach
Widening access to the legal profession and broadening understanding of the career possibilities is something that is very important to Freshfields, and it is key to ensuring we are able to recruit the best and brightest talent from the most diverse talent pool possible. We have long-standing successful relationships with our two partner schools in London - Redlands Primary and Haggerston Secondary – with whom we run several skills-based volunteering programmes and provide strategic advice through governance. We wanted to extend our reach and inspire children nationwide, to encourage them to consider the legal profession. The e-learning resource we’ve developed with Cambridge allows us to reach pupils in a way that simply wasn’t possible before.
Making content accessible
The role-play based programme allows students to discover the wide range of opportunities available in law firms and explore the varied specialisms within the legal profession. With four workshop sessions, the programme can be delivered either as an intensive day-long activity or in shorter theme-based sessions giving schools the flexibility to fit around their existing plans. Each workshop includes a role-play element to get the whole class involved, along with kick-start content and teacher’s notes to support learning.
Inspiring young people
Our goal is to help young people develop the knowledge and understanding to consider law as a career option. By giving them insights into the day-to-day life of a lawyer, the varied skill sets and the range of options within law, we hope that we will make law more accessible and students will be inspired to think about a legal career.
The resource is available free to all secondary schools, to access the materials, simply go to www.cambridge-hitachi.com/freshfields
