We have a winner! Shakespeare Film Competition 2016-17

 

Last year in honour of Shakespeare’s  birthday, we launched our Shakespeare Film Competition for schools all over the world. We received some great entries and we’re pleased to report that there is some truly outstanding directorial and acting talent out there. Our series editors for Cambridge School Shakespeare Vicki Wienand and David James had their work cut out to choose a winner…but choose one they did.

Drum roll please…

We’re delighted to announce that the students of Droylsden Academy in Manchester, UK are the winners of our Shakespeare Film Competition! The students performed Macbeth Act 2 Scene 4 and you can view their entry below. The judges had the following to say in their notes:

We thought this was good: the acting, of both Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the murderer, was effective. There were some interesting intercutting, and camera angles heightened the tension, with Banquo represented as a POV. The soundtrack was very effective too.

Congratulations to Droysden Academy students  Molly, Noelly, Lisa, Louise, Megan, James, Sheona, Chloe, Taylor and of course their teacher Rachel Fernandez who sent in the winning entry.

Our students engaged with this project impressively; together, they discovered an interpretation of Macbeth that is contemporary, visceral and pumping with energy. From script to screen, they worked incredibly hard under the creative eye of their student director who brought her own passion for politics and literature into the rehearsal room. This project has inspired the students to engage further with both Shakespeare and film; they are already planning their next project! Thank you for the opportunity!” said Rachel Fernandez.

As a prize each student will receive a £20 Amazon voucher and the school will receive a class set of Macbeth from the Cambridge School Shakespeare series including a copy of Teaching Shakespeare.
