Who we are
A dedicated education reform team whose goal is to help societies evolve and grow by improving education equity and quality, raising standards, and giving learners the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to succeed in the modern world.
Cambridge University Press is a not-for-profit organisation and a non-teaching department of the University of Cambridge. It published its first book in 1584, making it the oldest media business in the world.
Over the next four centuries, the Press's reputation spread throughout Europe thanks to its high-quality academic texts, poetry and school books. In the 20th century, it continued to extend its influence as a global publisher, as well as working with governments and education organisations to develop education systems and improve learning outcomes.
Today, Cambridge University Press has over 50 offices across the globe, employs over 2,000 people, publishes over 50,000 titles by authors from over 100 countries, and is still growing, bringing thousands of subjects and millions of ideas to the world.
The Education Reform team is a dynamic unit within the Press, offering holistic reform solutions through cutting-edge expertise, and backed by the extensive knowledge and heritage of the Press and the University as a whole.

Rod Smith, Managing Director of Education
As the Managing Director of Education at Cambridge University Press, Rod is responsible for the overall leadership of schools and education reform businesses, both in the UK and globally.
After graduating from Fitzwilliam College Cambridge with a degree in English Literature, Rod spent some time teaching before moving into the educational publishing and services sector. Over the last 25 years, Rod has worked at organisations including Pearson, Reed Elsevier and Oxford University Press, where he held a number of roles covering education management, strategy development, strategic marketing and communications, and education management. For the last three years he has led the global education portfolio at Cambridge University Press.
Rod is responsible for overseeing one of the most dynamic and fastest growing companies in its sector. He possesses extensive experience across UK and international education, combined with a strong commercial background. This is coupled with a reliable track record of growing businesses through strategic review and change, product and service development, marketing and innovation. Rod is also experienced in working with governments to provide a holistic approach to developing high-quality print and digital resources aligned to a country’s local educational strategy and objectives.
Jane Mann, Director of Education Reform
Jane leads the team in the development and delivery of sustainable solutions for education programmes around the world.
A skilled publishing consultant with over 20 years’ experience spanning education and trade sectors, Jane has considerable experience in developing resources and publishing teams for education reform programmes. She has worked with ministries, agencies and organisations to design effective systems, materials and programmes to address key educational needs which result in positive change.
Jane’s background in resource implementation, capacity development, regulatory frameworks, project management and education reform consultancy complements her extensive knowledge of print and digital publishing in both domestic and international markets. Her in-depth experience of development projects includes needs analysis, stakeholder and budget management, process design, building training programmes and developing infrastructures to develop capacity. Coupled with previous roles within education, this expertise has allowed Jane to share invaluable insight with both her team and with wider organisations when working together on education reform projects.

Lewis Birchon, Head of Publishing and Research
Lewis works on Education Reform projects that have a publishing focus and works in collaboration with the Faculty of Education to produce the Cambridge Research Reports.
After over a decade in educational publishing, Lewis has accumulated experience across academic and vocational, print, web and multimedia, core curriculum resources and teacher support. He has collaborated with education experts, awarding organisations, teacher support networks and ministries of education to design user-focused resources that enhance learning outcomes.
Lewis has held a number of roles in editorial and commissioning, and been involved in the introduction of a range of workflow efficiencies, including software solutions, such as sophisticated writing templates and pilots of InCopy, and process improvements, including the adoption of Prince 2 methodology. This provides Lewis with a deep pool of past experience to draw on, helping to anticipate and avoid pitfalls associated with large-scale, complex publishing projects and the demands of short timeframes and high quality.

Kagendo Salisbury, Marketing Manager
Kagendo heads the Education Reform marketing function and works collaboratively with the ministry teams to develop and execute clear, consistent and coherent communication strategies that support the implementation of education reform agendas.
Kagendo is a skilled senior marketing professional with over a decade of experience built across a range of industries including publishing, pharmaceutical, hotel and tourism. She has worked with organisations and agencies on B2B marketing, as well as with governments and NGOs on capacity development projects across developing countries.
Kagendo’s experience spans strategy creation and implementation in multiple marketing disciplines including PR & communications, brand management, digital marketing, product marketing and event management.

Annie Michailidou, Head of International Development
Annie leverages her expertise in forging strategic global partnerships to develop and strengthen collaborations between Cambridge University Press and education ministries, education organisations and international development organisations across the world. She also identifies opportunities for projects with third-party organisations, such as the Department for International Trade (DIT), The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), UNICEF and the British Council.
Annie’s background is in strategic business intelligence research and foreign direct investment, with a focus on the education sector. She has more than ten years’ experience of overseeing business intelligence reports and projects that examine economic trends, education reforms, political risk and regulatory developments in the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia. A former media commentator on CNBC and Bloomberg, she was featured as a ‘Top Woman of the Year’ by Management Magazine, Africa in 2014. She has an MA in International Business Management and BA in International Relations and Diplomacy. Annie has developed networks in over 120 countries, and moderated international events for Heads of Government and State.
As the Head of International Development, Annie works very closely with the Education Reform partners to identify the right approaches to creating customised and innovative solutions that improve education equity and quality, and deliver economic and social transformation.

Teri Putnam – Head of Delivery
In her role as Head of Delivery, Teri is responsible for the Programme Management and Operations teams, who work together to manage projects and resources, in the production of market-specific content and bespoke services to meet customers’ needs on time and to the highest quality.
Teri’s publishing career started in 2002 in trade publishing for a children’s book publisher, working in an editorial capacity, and has spanned a number of roles in editorial, production and project management, working with global teams to deliver print and digital components to help learners across the globe, both on customised publishing for specific customers and in international editions of multi-level, multi-component courses.
Through these many roles, Teri has embedded processes and systems that help realise efficiencies and enable teams to get products to market faster and more cost-efficiently, while ensuring the quality of the product is of utmost consideration at all times. She’s particularly passionate about developing people to realise their potential, enabling them to continue to grow professionally and to increase their contribution within the team and on any given project.
