Work Experience 2019

We are pleased to host work experience for school students in our Cambridge office. Our central programme for Year 12 and 13 students takes place between 1st and 12th July. This is an ideal opportunity to find out how an international publishing house works, whether you are interested in working for us straight after school (through an apprenticeship), after university (through the Graduate Programme), or later in your career.

Available roles
Editorial Assistant, Academic

The Editorial team identifies new authors and publishing opportunities. We work with our authors from book idea through to publication and beyond, supporting them at all stages, but particularly while they are writing the book. Editors work closely with a wide range of other departments including legal, finance, content management, marketing and sales.

You will have the chance to interact with a range of colleagues and gain a good understanding of the whole publishing process, including commissioning, content development, production, as well as legal and financial aspects of publishing. Tasks may include:

  • Writing book ‘blurbs’
  • Checking illustrations
  • Assessing manuscripts
  • Researching images for book covers
  • Researching competing books
  • Archiving contracts
  • Attending team and project meetings

This placement would be ideal if you are interested in learning more about publishing from idea to publication and have good communication and IT skills.

You will be working within the life science editorial team, but a scientific background is not necessary.

 

Rights Sales Assistant

The Rights Sales team is responsible for licencing translations and other versions of Cambridge titles globally. We are a business to business sales team, working mostly with foreign language publishers. There are five of us in the Cambridge-based team, and we have Rights colleagues in New York, China and the Philippines.

This placement will give you insights into copyright licencing and where it fits in to the life cycle of a Cambridge product. You will experience each stage of a translation contract; from the rights granted to us by our authors, to the rights we licence out to others and the product that results. Tasks may include:

  • contract checking and updating
  • title selection and marketing
  • customer interaction
  • royalty calculation 
  • record maintenance

This placement will be ideal for you if you have an interest in languages, contracts, and sales. You will need good attention to detail and will be interested in working with colleagues from all parts of our publishing business.

 

Legal and Business Affairs Assistant

The Legal and Business Affairs Department helps the business solve legal problems and manage risks globally. We give colleagues advice about how to buy, protect, use and sell intellectual property and to comply with the law wherever we operate.

If you have ever thought about a career in the law and want to understand all about what it might be like to work as a lawyer in a company like the Press, we would like to hear from you. The placement will be hands on, and when working in this team, tasks may include:

  • attending meetings with our lawyers
  • helping us with drafting legal documents
  • helping us with queries, including research
  • helping us with training
  • meeting each of the different legal teams that work here

This placement would be suited to anyone with an interest in the law who would like to learn more about different legal roles, how to become a lawyer, and what it’s like to work in a legal department.

 

Bookshop Assistant

The Press Bookshop is unique. Owned and operated by Cambridge University Press it is the only official bookshop and showroom the Press has in the world. Dedicated to selling Cambridge University Press products, it occupies the oldest bookshop site in the country, where books have been continuously sold since 1581. This placement involves lots of interaction with the public and a large team of colleagues. Tasks may include:

  • Pricing stock 
  • Assisting with deliveries 
  • Database work 
  • Marketing 
  • Customer service

This placement will be ideal if you would like to work in a retail or sales environment, if you have good customer service skills, good standard of literacy and numeracy and basic computer skills.

 

Marketing Assistant, Academic Books and Journals

Working closely with the Sales and Production departments, the End User marketing teams promote print/ eBooks and journals to our end customers (students, lecturers, academic researchers, practitioners and general readers) worldwide. This is achieved through a range of activities, including: email marketing, social media, exposure at key conferences, print and digital advertising.

This placement will be ideal for someone who is keen to learn how a Marketing Executive works on a global scale, will give insight into global marketing campaigns, and experience in the use of digital marketing. The candidate will be working predominantly on Social Science books and journals, including Economics, Business and Management and Sociology. However, prior knowledge of these subjects is not required. Tasks may include:

  • Assisting with conference preparation 
  • Processing review coverage 
  • Updating the Cambridge websites 
  • Uploading author blog posts 
  • Research projects 
  • Social media work - learning Hootsuite, scheduling book announcements and reviews, content creation 
  • Setting up Google AdWords 
  • Design work 
  • Preparation of press releases 

This placement would be ideal for confident and creative candidates with a keen eye for detail, who are interested in marketing and publicity, as well as the publishing industry in general.

 

Design Assistant, English Language Teaching

The Design team in the English Language Teaching department at Cambridge University Press is responsible for the concept design of all our product and marketing materials, for both print and digital platforms. We create designs for all markets around the world and work on content for students learning English from the age of 3 up to adult learners. We work closely with many different teams in the department such as editorial, marketing and production, as well as working with external designers and illustrators. Tasks may include:

  • Researching current design and illustration trends in our key markets 
  • Attending design meetings and being able to give your own opinions and ideas on concept designs 
  • Working on creative briefs with members of the team and coming up with your own designs for current projects 
  • Developing mood boards to support the design work 


This placement will be ideal for you if you are interested in Art and Design and would like to learn more about the creative roles that are available within the Publishing industry. Candidates with beginner knowledge of design software (including Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) would be desirable but not essential.

 

Supply Chain Assistant

This role is based with the Procurement team, which ensures that the Press manages risk business from a supplier perspective through good contracts and appropriate checks on suppliers. We have to ensure that the Press gets value for money for all of its external spend. The team do this in a number of ways including negotiating new deals and contracts, and seeking out the best partners for the future who can give us the best balance of cost and service.
The placement is ideal for any student who wishes to work in a business or commercial based environment - it will give you a small glimpse into the world of business, the impact things have on financial performance and how procurement influences the shape of a business. Tasks may include:

  • Undertaking some internet research into some products and services 
  • Making changes to the Procurement intranet site and Management Information System 
  • Shadowing a Global Procurement Manager in negotiations and/or stakeholder engagements

This placement will be ideal for you if you are articulate and confident with good IT skills, are adept at using the internet and have a curious mind.

 

Communications Assistant

The Communications department at Cambridge University Press looks after all of the external and internal communications to ensure that all of the people we work with, customers, students, teachers and the media stay up to date with all of our news and developments. Tasks may include:

  • Writing a news story 
  • Writing a press release to send to the media 
  • Writing a tweet to use on our social media accounts 
  • Researching and selecting photos 
  • Attending team and project meetings 

This placement would be suited to anyone with an interest in writing who would like to learn more about communications, the media and publishing.

Learning Solutions

The Learning Solutions team in the English Language Teaching department at Cambridge University Press works with customers ranging from individual schools all the way to ministries of education, to design holistic solutions including customised learning materials and a wide range of educational services.  You’ll have the chance to work with a wide range of teams and colleagues, and gain experience in the editorial and commercial sides of publishing.  Tasks may include:

  • Analysing data on our current and target customers
  • Supporting project delivery, which may include proposal drafting, scheduling, or project management
  • Research projects
  • Attending meetings

This placement will be ideal if you are interested in understanding customers and designing project to reach them more effectively. Learning Solutions project tend to require flexibility, adaptability and a keen eye for detail, so a candidate with these skills would be preferred.

Education Reform Assistant

The Education Reform team has a central goal to help societies evolve and grow by improving education equity and quality, raising standards, and giving learners the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to succeed in the modern world. We work with governments and other organisations around the world who are changing their education systems, supporting them with publishing, teacher training, capacity development, and communications plans & stakeholder engagement.

Our work is very varied, and we work with many other departments of the University, as well as with other organisations, such as UNICEF, and the British Council.

The placement could include many varied tasks, but is likely to involve:

  • helping our business development team  
  • helping with communications – press releases, social media, etc.
  • working with our delivery team on publishing and training projects
  • getting involved in our refugee education project with UNICEF
  • attending meetings with our Education Reform team
  • assisting with research projects

Anyone who wants to find out more about how governments change their education systems, about how education helps developing countries, and about how to create teaching and learning materials and training programmes to suit other education systems, (sometimes in other languages), would find this placement interesting.

Internships

We are pleased to host internships in our Cambridge, Cape Town and New York offices. Our internships are paid and usually take place in the summer, although occasionally openings are available throughout the year. We are also proud to partner with Creative Access on a six week summer programme in Cambridge. Our interns are encouraged to use the opportunity to network and meet a wide range of people across all areas of publishing. They gain insights into the operations of a global publishing house, as well as valuable contacts and hands-on experience, which can be instrumental in gaining employment.
