About the Authors
  • Fundamentals of Anaesthesia is the gold standard text for the Primary FRCA, encapsulating the basic principles of modern anaesthesia in one easily accessible volume. Written and edited by experts with extensive FRCA examination experience, this text deliberately blends the expertise of invited authors in an unrivalled consistency of style more akin to that of a single author text. All of the subject matter required to pass the exam is condensed into an easy-to-read format. This fully updated fourth edition includes new guidelines, an improved chapter structure, and a new section on clinical ultrasound. The generous use of summary boxes, bullet points, tables and diagrams creates a text that is clear, concise and easy to navigate. Each section covers one of the four components of the SOE. This is a unique revision aid for the Primary FRCA and an essential companion for all exam candidates.

    • Fourth edition has been updated to reflect changes in FRCA curriculum and advances in practice
    • Written with needs of trainee anaesthetists in mind and so it is focused on key areas to complement both their clinical work and preparation for exams
    • Diagrams are deliberately simple to allow easy reproduction during an oral examination or in the operating theatre

    Reviews & endorsements

'Without hesitation, this book is a great core text for the FRCA exam. There are other books of a similar stature, but this book is very closely aligned with the UK FRCA syllabus and will therefore remain a useful adjunct for British candidates. This is a welcomed update to the third edition which has already established itself as an invaluable resource for the FRCA exam. This edition is more relevant for the modern syllabus and the updated guidelines further enhance the utility of this book for juniors undertaking the exam for the next five years. The book is not glamorous or visually stunning, but it serves the objective of being a great aid for the FRCA exam.' British Medical Association Programme and Award Winners 2017

'This book does well to include a thorough, detailed review of the fundamentals of anesthesia and is much easier to read and understand than many of the other books currently on the market. For that reason, it is a great starting point for trainees to learn about anesthesia and is a useful reference for experienced anesthesia providers.' Sarah A. Maclean and Richard L. Applegate, Anesthesia & Analgesia

In section 1: Clinical Anaesthesia ( page20 ) “Clotting abnormalities” states that : - APTT is prolonged by warfarin therapy and liver disease. - PT is prolonged by heparin therapy . I checked in following resources: - Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine - Cecil essentials of medicine ( textbook ) - Pre Operative assessment guidance ( Southampton University) All revealed that this part in the mentioned above textbook unlikely to be right.
