University Publishing Manager
Department: Academic
After my year as a grad, I applied to two jobs in my “home” department - Academic. One of the jobs I applied for essentially followed on from my graduate summer project to scope and research the launch of new language editing services for authors. The second was the one I took and is my current role – University Publishing Manager.
This job involves being a liaison person between Cambridge University Press and the rest of the University, and identifying and launching new ways of working together. As an ex-academic, my background was well suited to at least 50% of this role, but the diversity of placements I did during the grad scheme really helped me navigate and understand the publishing side.
Importantly, the grad scheme also allowed me to meet a much wider range of colleagues and contacts across all departments of CUP, which helps me immensely when I have to identify the best person to speak to about a particular project! My job also involves a lot of “non business as usual” work and, again, the grad scheme was useful in allowing me to quickly see and participate in a wide range of ways of working and product types. Business as usual in one part of CUP isn’t necessarily the same as another!
